A Little From Its Heart

Imagine being only minutes old...

and already beginning one of the greatest journeys of your life.

A tiny sea turtle emerges from beneath the sand having never seen the world before.

No one waits beside the nest to explain what comes next.

No map.

No instructions.

No experienced turtle standing nearby saying,

Okay, little one. Here's the plan.

And yet...

it begins.

Somehow, that tiny turtle knows to move toward the water.

The journey isn't easy.

Before it ever reaches the ocean, there are obstacles to cross and predators to escape.

And reaching the water isn't the end of the challenge.

In many ways, it's only the beginning.

The ocean is enormous.

The turtle is impossibly small.

And still...

it goes.

There is something beautiful about that.

Because we spend so much of our lives believing we need to understand the entire journey before we're brave enough to begin.

We want to know where we're going.

How we'll get there.

What will happen when we arrive.

Whether we're making the right decision.

Whether we'll be okay.

But perhaps there are seasons when we aren't supposed to know everything yet.

Perhaps sometimes we only need to recognize the next direction.

Toward the water.

Toward the opportunity.

Toward the person.

Toward the dream.

Toward the life that feels a little more like our own.

And then...

go.

There are still mysteries surrounding the lives of sea turtles. Scientists have learned extraordinary things about their journeys, but perhaps part of their beauty is realizing just how remarkable those journeys really are.

Tiny hatchlings disappear into an enormous ocean.

They grow.

They travel.

They survive.

And years later, females can return to the same region where their own lives began to begin the story again.

How extraordinary is that?

Maybe we don't have to explain every bit of wonder away.

And maybe we don't have to understand every part of our own stories before we're willing to live them, either.

You don't need the whole map today.

You don't need to know exactly where this journey leads.

You don't even have to feel completely ready.

Sometimes courage is much smaller than that.

Sometimes courage is a tiny creature standing on an enormous beach...

looking toward an even more enormous ocean...

and somehow knowing:

That's where I need to go.

Take the next step.

Then another.

And another.
