A Little From Its Heart

Dragonflies have things to do.

There is food to find.

Places to go.

A whole day of very important dragonfly business waiting for them.

Some seem to approach it with absolute determination—darting from place to place as though someone handed them a tiny clipboard and a schedule that must be followed.

And then...

there are the dancers.

The ones who seem to catch the breeze just because it's there.

They swoop.

They turn.

They hover for a moment before racing away again, their wings catching the sunlight as though even getting from one place to another is something worth enjoying.

This little dragonfly is one of those.

He still has somewhere to go.

He still has things that need to be done.

He just refuses to believe that getting there has to be miserable.

Finding lunch?

That's a quest.

Flying across the pond?

An adventure.

A breeze moving through at exactly the right moment?

Well...

it would be rude not to dance in it.

Maybe there's something we can learn from him.

So much of life is made up of ordinary things.

Laundry.

Errands.

Work.

Appointments.

Dishes.

The thousand little responsibilities that fill the space between the moments we think we're waiting for.

And if we're always rushing through those things just to get to the good part...

we may accidentally rush through most of our lives.

You don't have to love every task.

You don't have to pretend everything is exciting.

But perhaps every now and then, you can change the way you move through it.

Turn up the music.

Take the pretty road.

Laugh when things don't go exactly according to plan.

Notice the breeze.

Make it a quest.

Because joy doesn't have to wait until the work is finished.

Sometimes joy is something we bring along for the ride.

So spread your wings.

Do what needs doing.

But whenever you can...
